Foundation Trusts are fundamentally different types
of organisation with greater freedoms than existing NHS
Trusts.
While subject to the same regulatory regime as other public and
private providers, their legal status is as mutually owned,
not-for-profit, “public benefit corporations” with freedom to
decide how to raise funds and meet national targets and standards.
Foundation Trusts are authorised and regulated by
Monitor› - the independent regulator of NHS
Foundation Trusts. Monitor requires clear evidence that Trusts can
meet stringent financial, service and corporate governance
standards before it will approve applications for Foundation
status.
The transition into Foundation Trusts is a significant journey
