China Health VIII and Health VIII Support Projects
The Health VIII /Health VIII Support Project, formal title “Basic
Health Services Project”, is co-funded by the World Bank, the UK
Government and the Government of China. It strengthens and improves
the performance of rural health services in more than 90 of the
poorest counties of China.
The project aims to increase China’s capacity to deliver
appropriate and effective services to poor communities
through:
- improving the allocation and management of resources for
health
- upgrading rural health facilities
- improving the quality and effectiveness of health services
- increasing risk sharing and affordability of essential
healthcare for the poor
HLSP is working closely with the Foreign Loan Office of the
Ministry of Health on a joint programme of technical assistance as
it implements health policy reforms and improves services for the
rural poor. HLSP is contracting Chinese and International health
experts to advise the Government of China in all aspects of the
project. We are organising training courses for high-level Chinese
officials in project evaluation, health services insurance and
financing, and service quality strategies. HLSP is also
facilitating study tours for Chinese officials to Thailand, the USA
and Bangladesh to learn about other countries’ experiences in
health services development and financing.
