Second National HIV Communication Survey, 2009

S. Johnson, D. L. Kincaid, S. Laurence, F. Chikwava, R. Delate and L. Mahlasela, 2010

The Second National HIV Communication Survey (NCS) examines the impact of HIV communication programmes in South Africa on improving knowledge and reinforcing positive beliefs, norms and attitudes, which in turn sustain or bring about behavioural change in relation to HIV prevention, care, support and treatment. It aims to assist policymakers and planners in the design of future HIV communication strategies and programmes.

Key findings include:

  • Impressive reach of HIV communication programmes - with 90% of the population aged 16-55 years exposed to one or more health communication programmes (HCPs).
  • Highest exposure to HCPs in the segments of the population that HCPs intended to reach.
  • Success in a number of areas related to HIV in terms of building knowledge, developing appropriate attitudes and beliefs, and changing behavior patterns.

The NCS was carried out by HLSP’s sister company HDA, and commissioned by the South African Department of Health, USAID, PEPFAR, CDC, and the Global Fund.
