Understanding Health Economics for Development

2010 (CD-ROM)

This CD-Rom aims to help you understand basic health economics with a particular focus on low income country settings.

It will introduce you to some of the key issues and give you some idea of where health economists ‘are coming from’. The CD provides an overview of issues and challenges for financing the health sector, and paying for health care and preventive services.

What does it cover?
The CD is structured in five modules:

  1. Overview of health sector issues and challenges
  2. The economics of health care markets: should governments get involved, and how?
  3. Setting priorities in health: what needs to be delivered and what should governments pay for? How much health spending is needed?
  4. Public or private sector: who should deliver services and how?
  5. How should services be financed?

The course is presented through animated slides, illustrated with diagrams and charts.

Who is it for?
This learning tool is mainly intended for national and international staff involved in the design or implementation of health programmes. It will also be useful to officials in partner governments, consultants, and anyone wishing to better understand the complexities of health financing.
