Effective development assistance: a guide to aid instruments

2005 (CD-ROM)

This CD-ROM provides a structured overview of key aid instrument and development assistance issues. The ‘teach yourself’ format allows you to work at your own pace, moving rapidly through the sections you are familiar with, or exploring less familiar issues in more detail. There are also exercises, a bibliography and a series of key web links.

The CD has five modules covering:

  • the development context: poverty, the architecture of international aid, the Millennium Development Goals, Poverty Reduction strategies;
  • aid instruments such as projects, sector-wide approaches and direct budget support, exploring their pros and cons, and considering when and where each is applicable;
  • practical issues such as partnership working, fiduciary risk, procurement and monitoring.

Who is it for?
You will find this resource useful if you are a sector specialist or consultant involved in designing programmes and working through the approaches, instruments and the ways different donors operate; an administrator within an aid agency trying to gain a better understanding of the context and rationale for different ways of working; or an official in a partner country who needs to understand donor priorities and perspectives.
