Reviews of Social Marketing Programmes and Other Market Initiatives

DFID has funded the promotion and distribution of condoms and insecticide-treated mosquito nets through the commercial sector in a number of countries. This social marketing approach has been used in Kenya to make subsidised condoms and nets more widely available, while in Nigeria a Total Market Approach is being used to encourage shop-keepers to stock nets (DFID also funds the subsidised condoms in Nigeria). HLSP experts were hired through the Health Resource Centre to conduct the regular reviews required of all DFID programmes.
